I am in the market for internet service. I have found that in today’s marketplace, dialup just no longer makes sense. Even my email takes forever to download through dialup when someone sends me a large file or a photograph. So how do I locate high speed internet providers in my area? I would like to identify a step by step process for answering all of my questions, such as what are the similarities and differences between cable internet, DSL, satellite, and fiber optics? How can I avoid making a costly mistake? What type of speed do I need for various activities on the internet? What package makes sense for me? And most importantly, which providers service my area?

In my research, I ran across some information on Qwest DSL. They had some great speeds available at competitive prices. I found out that DSL doesn’t interfere with my telephone signals the way dialup did. Qwest offered various packages with different incentives and equipment available for each package. I could also rent a modem if I didn’t want to purchase my own. Included in their deal was protection software like anti-virus, spyware and spam filtering, as well as firewall and parental controls.
